Frequently Asked Program Questions

Please reach us at clearspace@kerrynsimmonscoaching.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Your money is renewable. Your time is not. Invest both wisely.

A 15-30 min strategy session is an opportunity for you to ask me questions and get some immediate help. It also gives you a chance to see if my style, approach, personality and sense of humour is a good fit for you.  I may not be your cup of tea and that's ok, I have a great network of coaches and can recommend another coach for you.

A 15-30 min strategy session is also a chance for me to understand where you're at and to honestly assess whether coaching is the best fit for where you're at right now in your journey to clear space. You may only need some tips and free resources, you may need coaching and bespoke resources, or you may need a combination of coaching and therapy, or you may need to focus exclusively on therapy for the time being.

Life happens and I don't want you stressing about attending sessions if your health is in decline or some other unexpected event occurs. I prefer that you offer yourself some grace and compassion and rest when needed and that you prioritise important life events and holidays.

I also know first hand how emotional it can be to clear your home and realise how unhelpful or unkind other decluttering processes may have been for your body and brain. It can be a lot to process so sometimes clients will want to schedule in a break of a week or two.

I typically start with an initial session and then in consultation with you assess what session length and session frequency may work best.  We will then schedule a six to twelve week block and it's recommended that clients take a break for a week or two before continuing with their next block of sessions.

Kerryn Simmons Coaching offers a variety of session lengths and frequency that can be adapted as you go. Please don’t be concerned if a work, family, medical or personal appointment comes up during a session block that necessitates rescheduling or postponing a session. If you have a chronic illness or disability and require session length adjustments that can be accommodated.

Clear Space programs

Standard session lengths are 60 minutes but depending on client energy levels individual sessions may range from 45 - 75 minutes and we will even out the time over the course of your program.

To provide the high level of bespoke service Kerryn Simmons Coaching is known for I strictly limit the number of one to one coaching clients at any one time.

This allows us space to continue to develop free resources and member only modules. It also allows me to manage my chronic health condition without impacting clients.

Your Questions, My Answers

Perhaps a better question is how many sheets do you want to manage?

Strictly speaking you only need one set of sheets per bed. Truth is you can keep as many sets of sheets as you like, but if you want a clear space keep as many sheets as you like provided they don't exceed 1. your designated container for sheets and 2. your clutter threshold. If they do exceed the realities of your space and your ability to manage them you will have clutter.

Now I know a lot of coaches wouldn't give you a definitive answer but I will tell you what works for me.

In my home I have two sets of sheets. I have a very low clutter threshold in most rooms so I keep my inventory as low as possible. For the past few years I have managed with one set on my bed and one set for the guest bedroom. I wash and line dry my sheets on the same day and then remake my bed. If my sheets don't dry in time then I use the guest bedroom set. The benefit of low inventory in this area is that I was able to purchase high quality, vintage french linen sheets that get softer with each wash. I prefer to invest in something that will get high use and result in a low cost per use. This is a more sustainable way of shopping for me. High quality that lasts longer and feels great. True investment.

In my two bedroom home I couldn't personally manage more than three sets of sheets. In five years it's never been a problem to have only two sets. Even when I lived in a much colder climate.

Also sheets take up a lot of space and I don't have a linen cupboard. I prioritised other items for the space I have.

So my general rule of thumb is one set per bed and if you have children or health challenges one spare set for the household.

The container concept states that the purpose of a container is to contain. It’s a limit.

Our homes and all storage spaces within it is are containers.

A jar is a container, so is a table, a bench, a shelf, a basket, a cupboard, a cabinet, wardrobe, a dishwasher, a washing machine, a room, even your house itself. They all have inbuilt limits based on their dimensions.

Many of us that have struggled with clutter have thought the purpose of a container was to store as much stuff as possible and if all our items didn't fit then we should buy more containers.  This thought process ignored the reality of our space: it is finite.

It may seem like a subtle difference to think of containers as limits rather than storage, and  yet it is a powerful distinction.

Your clutter threshold is how much you can easily manage.

When we work together to clear your space we make sure everything fits within the limit of its designated container. This removes clutter from your home and the accompanying stress and overwhelm. This makes your home more manageable, but it may not make your home easily manageable. To do that we work together to clear your space until it is below your personal clutter threshold.  So instead of having a container like your wardrobe full to 100% capacity, we may work out that the tipping point from it being easily manageable is when it is at 75% capacity.

For example, my second kitchen drawer is a container for my dinnerware. It contains four bowls and four plates. It could easily hold more as it is only at about 60% capacity, but I would not be under my clutter threshold. I would find it more difficult to manage that space once it reached 75% capacity, let alone 100%. Not impossible, but not as simple and easy as it currently is to see and access everything in that drawer.  My clutter threshold is different for each space. There are some spaces where I can easily manage them at 90% capacity, whereas other spaces I need to limit to 50% capacity.
